Hello all.

I'm new in town and live near Myrtle Beach National. I'm trying to map out a local course rotation for weekday play. Although I live near Legends, I have been reading reviews indicating it plays slow and is crowded. Apparently they put people out on 1 and 10 on both courses and that really slows things down at the turn if you play in the morning. The Legends Royalty card seems like a good deal, but not if it plays 5 hours on a weekday. I think it gets a lot of resort traffic that fills up the courses.

What are ya'lls opinion on this place?

Thanks

Don

I have played the Legend courses for years when we are in MB. I can't remember have to play any 5 hour rounds. with the  courses there they do have alot of play. Most of our rounds were 4 1/4 to 4 1/2. Great practice area and course are in good shape.

Legends is very popular with visitors and locals. It has a good
low cost membership for locals that includes range use, so yes
it's busy.

Teeing off #1 + #10 is used at 90% of the MB courses, so there
will be more early tee times and so they can do it again in the PM.
This does slow the pace for those hoping to play at 4 hours or less.

Legends gets more reports of slow play than most Mb courses, but
that may be due as much to the good package deals that seems to
attract more partying groups or big groups that are bound to have .
some occasional golfers.

I am not local, but I see many locals saying if you like variety and
more tee time options in busy seasons, you should have more
than one discount card, IE Prime Times, Trail Card, Legends,
Mystical, Passport.    Get what fits your needs and their rules.

If you like to be a early bird with better odds of faster rounds,
try these single tee courses.  Lockwood - BF Fazio
BF Norman - Wild Wing(Avocet) - MW(Palmetto).

These courses Single Tee usually, but they don't have to:
Tigers Eye - Leopards Chase - Panthers Run - Cape Fear - Surf - The Dunes
Crown Park

Rivers Edge single tees as well; it's one of the changes the new owner implemented.

It's rare for private clubs to double tee, but none of them are accessible without a member contact anyways (other than the Dunes with their limited package availability). I'm not sure I've ever played a private club in the MB area or anywhere else that was double teeing, although I'm sure some do occasionally.

@artmbgolf I should have mentioned that Myrtle is a second home for us. Our primary home is in Raleigh. Not much double teeing up there. We just relocated our second home to MB from Tucson so we can drive and shuttle between homes easily.

That being said, we have the option to choose when we want to be here. What would you say are the most and least crowded months in terms of golf packages, etc.?

thanks

I have lived in Pawleys Island now for 3.5 years now.  This year (2024) package play is way up.  During peak months (late February - end of May and mid September - late November.) I've always been able to find a tee time.  Now that beach season is here, most courses are relatively open in the mid to late afternoon.  My last six or seven rounds I have gotten tee times between 2:00 - 4:00 PM and have played as a single in 2.5 - 3 hours.  (Somedays I have to travel farther than others to achieve this.)

I'm a Royalty Club member and play most of my rounds using this card at Heritage.  Trying to get a tee time that results in a sub 4 hour round at any of the Legends courses is only possible during beach season and during December and January.

As a Primes Times card holder I can always find a tee time at one of their courses and play at a reasonable pace.

MB Golf Passport holder too.  Some of their courses are always packed such as Caledonia, True Blue, Prestwick, Hackler, Barefoot courses, Diamondback and Sandpiper Bay.  Some of their courses you can always find a tee time.

Note:  Many of the courses I've named have membership plans which gives those courses a certain amount of play then add package play and tee sheets fill up.

@kladusky Thanks - I've got the Passport card and am considering the Legends Royalty. I can see why getting a time and playing faster is possible this time of year between 2-4pm. too hot for me....

DCBogey gave the package peak periods.  I see peak package rates from mid March to
mid May and late Sept to mid Nov.

Increased local golfers is also a big increase in booked tee times.   If you can't get a tee time
at a desired course, look at the lower end courses and PM.

Mainly-- legends is a great value for quality of course. As others have mentioned-- the pace of play mainly relates to heritage (in my experience)-- and is mainly due to two things. First-- Legends-- tees every 8 minutes (most other premium courses are 9 -- some are even 10 -- TPC for example). Secondly, Heritage is pretty difficult course-- and so-- for 18+ handicapers-- its a grind-- and will take 4:45 on many days.

WOuldn't avoid them all together-- but you have to pick and choose times/days for sure. I love Oyster Bay as a layout-- conditions there are very spotty-- Heritage is absolutely one of my favorite-- so being stuck out there for 5 hours isnt the worst thing in the world!
