Hey All!

My friend and I are planning an upcoming golf trip this March as we will be on break (college students) and are looking for suggestions on where to play. We will be staying with friends by Grande Dunes and Carolina Forest for reference.

I was scouting using my Golf Now+ account and through this forum and found Pine Lakes, Man O War, and a few others to be decent. Obviously. We’re looking for three days of play, ideally two “value” courses sub $100, and a day of “luxury” if it’s worth it (Rivers Edge, TPC, etc. seemed exceptional)

Open to any and all ideas or suggestions you guys might have, cheers!

In Myrtle Beach, Golfnow usually lists the standard rate for the better courses
and may have a discount rate at the budget courses.   I haven't looked at GN
when it gets to 48 hours, so there may be some discounts then.
GN does not have all courses.

The premium courses use dynamic rates, so booking this close to play will have
some premium courses really high like $200+.   Generally premium spring
rates start on March 13 at most courses.

Under or around $100 centrally located:
Arrowhead      This is liked by most.
Arcadian Shores
MBN West  (Good forgiving first day course)
Myrtlewood   Either course.
Rivers Edge    Is very good and around $100, but a longer around 1 hour drive.
Man O War
The Pearl
River Hills

TPC - Grande Dunes - Kings North  will be good for your luxury.

Look at online tee times to see actual rates  https://www.myrtlebeachteetimesnow.com/
Rates are a little lower Mon-Wed and after 1PM.

Look at some of the websites for these courses to get a feel for the course.
You could plan unlimited 3 round lineups.

Art's suggestions are excellent. If you are willing to get off the road, I would also suggest Tiger Eyes and Leopard Chase. These are both very nice courses designed by Tim Cates. They are under 100$ presently.

My suggestion would be call Brian Noblin the owner of this site and see what he can do for you, he is a straight shooter and will get the best bang for your buck.  His number is at the top of the page.

For luxury, I'd suggest Tidewater (probably the prettiest/most scenic course) or Caledonia (the best public course in the MB area hands down, unless you consider the Dunes public). TPC Myrtle Beach is a good golf course, but it's kind of a typical Fazio design and I've played other Fazios elsewhere that are pretty similar. True Blue is another good option -- I personally prefer Caledonia, but True Blue is still very good and pretty different than anything else in the area. There are also the Barefoot courses... to me, the Dye is the best course there, with Fazio second, Love third, and Norman last, although they're all good. I also think Barefoot Fazio is a better course than TPC Myrtle Beach, although I think you're more likely to get great conditions at TPC.

I don't think Grande Dunes is remotely worth what they charge, plus the last time I played there it took almost 6 hours to play. Not a fan.

@uncgolf

Tidewater and Caledonia are definitely among the most scenic and well-regarded courses in Myrtle Beach, and I’d agree that Caledonia stands out as the best public option. True Blue is a solid alternative with a totally different feel, which makes for a great contrast if you're playing multiple rounds.

I’m with you on TPC Myrtle Beach—it’s a good track, but if you’ve played other Fazios, it might not feel all that unique. As for Barefoot, I’d rank them the same way you do—Dye first, then Fazio, Love, and Norman. The Dye course can be punishing but is definitely the most memorable.

Completely agree about Grande Dunes. The price tag doesn’t match the experience, and a six-hour round is just brutal. There are better options for the money.

I am weird but I have no love for TPC MB, I think it is just not a nice course. It is always in great shape, have great range and putting green, great pro shop people and attendants. I just don't like playing there, it is most likely me.

@jbshepherds It's probably because of what I mentioned above -- it's a nice course, but it feels like a relatively generic Fazio. There's a Fazio course about 30 minutes from where I live that is very similar to TPC Myrtle Beach, including the general setting.

That doesn't make it bad (it's certainly not bad) but there are a number of other courses in MB that do not feel like a course I could play at home.

Compared to other TPC courses, Myrtle Beach’s layout is relatively flat, making it visually and strategically less exciting. Some believe Fazio could have used more natural elevation changes to add variety to the gameplay. While water adds challenge, i think it is sometimes overused, particularly on holes where it seems forced rather than naturally integrated.

Welcome to the forum E.A.

I would skip the $150 courses and play 3 high end "middle tier" courses.

Some value courses in that category ... Arrowhead, Long Bay, The Pearl, Rivers Edge, Leopards Chase.... are all memorable, have great value and are as good as some of the "top tier" courses.

Maybe some other MB golf expert posters here can recommend some other great values in the "mid tier" category.....

Wild Wing Avocet is another good option not too far away. Any of the Legends courses fit the bill but are usually really busy.

if you want the MB marsh type of courses , then look at Rivers Edge, Pearl, Pawleys Plantation, Oyster Bay, Tidewater.

Just my opinion, I think Barefoot Dye is the most overrated course in MB, Played it 3 times and haven't been back. Many better ones for the money. Also, it is the last location that I got hit by a golf ball.
