Hello everybody, I was wondering if you could just let me know if Kings North is closing for renovations this summer as I’m about to plan my summer trip. I heard rumblings that they were going to be closing the course to update a few things, but I haven’t heard anything specific. Thank you very much.

I have also heard about KN renovations this summer.
I have not seen a report yet with details.

In my recent visit to KN, starter + pro shop guy confirmed it.
Starter added new bridges.  Pro shop did not know the grass type
on the greens, but Founders has used Tifeagle on all recent
green updates.

That sounds like a longer closing than most new greens renovations.
I usually go to MB early in Oct and there are usually some reviews
by then.

I received an email notification about the renovations, and it seems like there's quite a bit happening. However, despite some prior discussion about redesigning, the notification email surprisingly doesn't mention anything about that. Instead, it focuses on the renovation of greens and bunkers. I thought you might find this interesting, especially if you were possibly expecting details about a possible redesign.

On my spring trip, KN was the only course that had overseeded greens
and they were a thick overseed, as if they were worried about the
hybrid greens quality.   Some have complained at times recently.

I don't feel KN needs a redesign.  Greens + bunkers are enough.

New info for Kings North rennovations

Phase one of the renovation will last four months and focus on the front nine.

When King’s North reopens all 18 holes on October 3, the front nine will feature:

  • The greens at King’s North will be renovated and restored to their original size, reclaiming 30,000 square feet of putting surface, an expansion that will make them 36 percent larger, while adding pin positions that were eliminated by encroachment over the years. The new greens will feature TifEagle ultradwarf bermudagrass, a hearty strain that has performed exceedingly well in Myrtle Beach’s subtropical climate.
  • Every bunker on the course will be renovated and have Capillary Concrete bunker liners installed, eliminating washout and drastically improving drainage, both factors that will significantly enhance playability. Premium bunker sand will also be installed.
  • There will be significant changes to the layout as well, with an emphasis on reimagining the green surrounds. Many of King’s North’s current greens are framed by mounding that limits creativity on the approach and recovery shots. When the course reopens, players will be greeted by a layout that can be attacked through the air and along the ground.
  • King’s North has always enjoyed a rugged look, showcasing waste bunkers and the area’s naturally sandy soil, and Johnson will lean into that aesthetic as he remakes the course. Among the holes that will be getting significant makeovers will be No. 6, the iconic par 5 otherwise known as “The Gambler.” In addition to some technical work along the edges of the lake, one of “The Gambler’s” three fairway bunkers will be eliminated and replaced by a large waste area that will improve the look of the hole and the challenge.
