@ziggygolfer Yeah, that sounds like it's more about approving the final plan than anything else -- like they could potentially make some changes to the plan if there was enough pushback, but that the land will be developed into some kind of housing. Especially with 53 estate lots already approved for construction.
@ziggygolfer Thanks or the info and update.
Sounds like no Farmstead reopening.
You would expect that the owner of Farmstead got his $$$, since he
closed the course. They could have had some type of deal to keep
the course running, while the developer fights for maybe years to get
things approved, involving 2 states.

Hey Frosty : I completely get your concern over the Covid test within a day of travel. If you’ve not booked it yet, I can seriously recommend using DocHQ. They do them via video online and are the cheapest option available (£19.50 with discount). I would advise booking your time slots and test packs asap. One of our party had Covid a week before we flew and only tested negative the day before we travelled. You can test in groups of up to 4 people, and before getting together we all did lateral flow tests before the online one to make sure we were all OK and not at risk of cross-infecting one another.
I’m currently at my daughter’s graduation in Newcastle, so I’ll post later with course and food/bar recommendations.
Always happy to hear golf and food/bar recommendations Roomy.
Hi Frosty, where are you staying ?
MUST play courses - based on course conditions, and value for money are : Long Bay (best course we played - Jack Nicklaus course with small greens surrounded by bunkers, but terrific challenge), Meadowlands (not as challenging as Long Bay, but in pristine condition - look for deals on Golf Now, which I’ve never used in Myrtle Beach before, but many times in Orlando. You can secure a rate of $61 by ringing the course direct or via TeeUpTomorrow, but Hot Deals available on Golf Now - we got $40.99 !), Crown Park (good, but not outstanding condition, but ridiculously cheap at $34, and unanimously our best “bang for your buck” course), Aberdeen (tight off the tee, but very pleasing on the eye, a really warm welcome, and great overseed. Try to avoid immediately after rain, as there are parts that hold the water.)
I would avoid Eagle Nest, which will undoubtedly be fantastic once the recent work has bedded in, but the greens were sandy, and they’ve put in loads of new drainage channels in, but currently they look messy, and there are channels of sand over most fairways. Brunswick Plantation (Dogwood and Azalea 9’s are decent, cheap, and a gentle way to ease your way in). If you’ve not played Arrowhead, I’d very strongly recommend it, and Glen Dornoch and Thistle were getting great reports from the locals provided they are within your budget.
My best tip for securing the best prices on golf is to check availability on both TeeUpTomorrow and Golf Now (be aware, there will be other tee times available direct with the club, but not listed on these sites), then call the club, you want to play, or check on the Club’s websites, to see if they can match (and therefore avoid booking fees) or beat the online prices. Our favourite courses from previous visits, but not played this year are Grand Dunes, Pine Lakes, and Arrowhead. Myrtlewood Palmetto is also a fun course to play. If it’s been heavy rain, go for courses close to the sea on sandy soil rather than those inland.
Depending on where you are staying, if near Main Street, Ocean Drive, then our favourite bar was the International Café next to Duck’s towards the sea end of Main Street. Flynn’s further towards H17 also on Main Street is great, and has really good food with an Irish twist - bands on all day on Saturdays. Murphy’s Bar on the Beach near Cherry Grove Beach is also a great place, and has fantastic live music all day on Sundays. Molly Darcys is pretty good, and we have always stayed at Barefoot Landing before, so Bully’s is a pretty safe bet there, though not as good as it used to be (I think it’s got new owners). The Crooked Hammock Brewery at Barefoot has loads of craft beers, but lacks atmosphere. Sugrues on H17 gets great reviews on Trip Advisor, but in our experience, was dull - perhaps because we visited in Country Karaoke Night … we stayed for one drink !
Food wise : Flynn’s as mentioned above is great. The food in Bully’s is pretty good, and also in the Putter’s bar at Barefoot, but I think it closes at 10:00pm. Old South BBQ does great take-out ribs (you can eat in, but no license for booze) though again not as good as they used to be. Best breakfasts are in Eggs Up Grill or Dino’s, but the latter can have huge queues. Hoskins on Main Street gets great reviews, and there are ALWAYS people queuing to get in, so it must be good, though we didn’t try it. Sea Merchants on H17 is your best option for seafood. The best Hot Dogs are at Fenway Grill which is now located opposite the International Café on Main Street - great place for pre-golf brunch, but you eat outside on tables in front. Villa Tuscanna is a great Italian on H17. Mid Town Bistro on H17 is well worth a visit., as is the Mediterranean Grill (hard to spot) on H17 - basic inside and no liquor license, but great authentic Greek food. Hamburger Joe’s is a great cheap and cheerful option (terrific wings, but beware the hot sauce - it is hot !). Joe’s Bar and Grill is also a very good up-market option.
The new Bowling and Billiards on H17 is worth a visit on a rainy day for a bit of entertainment. Best shopping is at Tanger Outlets on H17 - don’t bother going to the other one on the 501 - it’s no better. Best supermarket to shop at for both quality and choice is Food Lion - Publix has gone downhill, and Walmart has more focus on selling EVERYTHING than doing a decent job on food and drink.
Anyway, that’s all that springs to mind at the moment, but if I think of more I’ll let you know. hope it helps, and I wish you and you chums a brilliant trip …
@yorkshire-roomy Thank's for the heads up about Murphy's on the Beach. Have never been, but hoping to give it a try during our trip in a few weeks.
I'm a big fan of beach or waterfront bars. Typically we try to get to Ocean Annie's, Patio's Tiki Bar and Captain Archie's. Most of our courses this trip are up north, so I don't think we'll get down to the marshwalk area at Murrell's Inlet.
Hey BrewCrew, We were up North and nowhere near Murrell’s inlet, but from past experience, the golf is way better value at North side, courses every bit as good, and easier to secure favourable tee times. There is another bar next door to Murphy’s (can’t remember its’ name, but it looks more upmarket than the decidedly downmarket Murphy’s, but they must be so envious that people fight for seating at Murphy’s whilst their bar is half empty !
Forgot to mention Captain Archie’s : lost count of the number of people telling us how much we’d love it if we liked International Café and Murphy’s, though never actually got there ???? - definitely worth checking out. Also, Filet’s near the swing bridge on the North Side is meant to be a great option for steak.
I challenge any of you guys to try a night supping well over a dozen pints of Dirty Myrtle in the International Café - splendid stuff, indeed, but not without effect ! Oh well, on our last night, they gifted me a tee shirt for my loyalty and custom during our stay !
@yorkshire-roomy Not certain, but I believe it could be Snookys Waterfront next to Murphy's. We've been to the original Snooky's in Little River. We may end up making it a double dip and doing drinks at Murphy's and dinner at Snooky's.
Captain Archie's seems to draw the locals and has down to earth, biker feel to it. Always a good afternoon.
Snooky’s is the correct answer ! Looked absolutely fine, but Murphy’s was rockin’ and packed !

Roomy - thanks so much for that comprehensive write-up. Much appreciated.
I should have said we always pre-book our golf well in advance for our MB trips. This will be our 25th trip so we have a list of courses we can’t not play when we come to MB but there’s usually a couple of slots for courses that we’ve played before but don’t make the Must Play Every Trip list or a rare track we haven’t played before. It’s always good to hear opinions for making those choices for our next trip - Meadowlands seems to be getting a lot of love at the moment so is a contender for 2023.
Thanks too for the bar/restaurant comments. We stay at Barefoot Yacht Club Villas so places within a short cab journey of the Villas are particularly interesting. Joe’s Bar and Grill is our favourite finer dining choice and Oscars (for the wings) and Putters at Barefoot are our go to bar options. Putters is handy is you are staying at Barefoot but not sure it’s one you’d drive a long distance for. We might give some of the Barefoot Landing options a try this year as they are just a stroll over the bridge for us. We’ve preferred to go to one off locations rather than chains historically.
Thanks again for the feedback.
Frosty, For a good night out, you need to take a taxi from Barefoot to Main Street, NMB : have a meal at Flynn’s and a few pints of Guinness, (or eat with the “wrinklies” at Hoskins, then stroll down the road towards the sea to Duck’s (Shag Dancing place), and the International Café for several Dirty Myrtles, then home. If you guys want to play darts or Pool walk a little further towards the beach, and turn right onto South Ocean Boulevard, and after about 50m the OD Lounge.

Thanks Roomy - we might well try that.
