I haven't seen this course mentioned yet and wanted to share my opinions.
Played it twice in the last 5 weeks.
First off, WCC is (way) off the beaten path for most MB golfers. The drive time there and back surpassed my time on the course-a first for me.
TEE TO GREEN:Tees were without complaint. Those of you who like "a little hair" on the fairway, this was the place. Not tight but not long. Wayward tee shots could find some rough areas but nothing unplayable. Generally, tough to find a fairway bunker.
GREENS: On your approach, they looked fairly defended/presented. Once on the dance floor, I found them pretty boring, i.e., not much contour. There were three that showed a lot of stress but nothing horrible.
HOLES TO NOTE:
The first. In my opinion, a terrible introduction to the course.
The ninth. Open tee shot with the best green complex on the course.
The 14th. Split fairway that demands thought and execution off the tee. Long, approach.
The 16th. Only miss is left.
The 17th. Tee shot decision is paramount. The "choke point" is maybe 15 yards wide. Green area is wide open. Not a fan of it.
VERDICT:
Definitely worth a visit.
Pro shop personnel were awesome.
The Brick House Pub is onsite and opens early. Great interior vibe and well appointed. Did not eat there so I can't opine on the food but there were people there early and...I purchased a bottle of Dasani and a fountain Coke for UNDER four bucks. Beat that at any course these days.
Back in the 1980's, I was in a group that used to like replays
and replays were hard to get. We always played Wedgefield
each trip, for the easy to get replay. Back then it was an
hour drive (from Cane Patch area) and there was no Rt 31.
Now it's an hour drive to Caledonia.
Wedgefield was nice back then. As more courses opened,
fewer golfers wanted to drive that far and it failed.
New owners have brought it back.
Hole #1 is a very interesting hole, but I agree it's a mess
for a first hole, as far as pace goes. Maybe there wasn't
a better place for the clubhouse.
#16 is a redesigned hole.
#17 is risk reward, otherwise it's a par 4 length.
It always was like that.

Art, thanks for the info regarding #16. I haven't looked at the historical aerials yet. Driving to the tenth tee and seeing that green to the right, it looked "out of place." My initial thought was it must be a 19th "settle bets" hole.
Do you remember the old 16th? Do you know if the routing changed to accommodate the current 16th?
I will quibble with you assessing 17 as risk/reward. Tee shot is so visually intimidating (maybe a hint on how to play the hole), I classify it as a rare safe/bold hole. Short, long, left, or right of the green won't put you in trouble if you play from the center of the fairway. Was it always a par five on the card?
Regarding the first hole:
I have to admit I did not think about pace both times I played it. Great point.
I may be too literal but why do you consider it "a very interesting hole?"
@say8pet
It's been about 28 years since I played Wedgefield.
When WF was reopening, I remember the article talking about a
new 16th hole and saying it was moved to the right, to make room
for housing. Follow the cart path from #15 and cross Wedgefield Rd.
The then basic par 3 #16 was in that woods between WF Road
and #10. It's all grown over now. Nothing built yet.
Looking at Google Maps, I noticed #10 was shorter and now a
par 4. It was a par 5 about 475 yards. The tee was about where
the #16 green is now.
#14 used to be a par 4. We used to hit irons out to the right
fairway. Now it's a par 5. Maybe they moved the tee back.
You would need to aim at the water and hit a big hook to
play to the left fairway back then and it looks like even more
hook is needed now.
I remember often being in the rough short of the weeds on
#17. That was back in the persimmon woods days, although
I was younger. If you did hit it long and in the weeds at the
narrow part, you could still be on in 3. It would be safer to
stay short of the marsh, then go for the green. It was always
a par 5 and looking like it does now. The trees between 17
and 18 were small then. It probably a better scramble hole.
#1 can be interesting with a good drive, because you then have
to decide to fade around the big tree on the right, line under
it or hit over it. Today maybe it's too big. On google maps it
appears to be sticking out too far into the fairway now, along
with the left tree sticking out. Best chance is a drive up
the left side.

Thanks as always for the info Art.
From the historic aerials, best guess is the new 16th opened late 2009/early 2010.
The old tees for #10 were about 80 yards beyond the current 16 green.
Very interesting Art! I have played Wedgefield maybe two times, many years ago. It is far away from Myrtle Beach, even more if your condo or hotrl is in North Myrtle Beach. We have many similar golf courses nearer. So, i prefer to play these courses.

Thanks @say8pet for the report and those great pics!
Wedgegield is among the few courses I haven't played yet in the vast Myrtle Beach area, but I'll definitely try to give it a shot in one of my future visits in Myrtle Beach!
Take care!

I was thinking about booking a round there for my August trip. Read this recent July review on Golfpass that seems less than kind
"Course is a below average beat up municipal course. Do not be fooled by Country Club in the name, if there are members I am sure the fees are very low. Greens have large spots of dirt, crab grass and clover. Slowest greens ever which is ok for the hackers all over the course Tough to get the break read through dirt and clover. Fairways and tee boxes are beat up. Pace of play is OK but it doesn't matter no starter and no ranger so take as long as you want. Feel free to jump in front of people at the turn even if there is a backup don't grab a beer if you want to keep your spot. The bag man in the lot is fantastic, it is all down hill after that."
Your knowledge of MB area golf courses is 2nd to none Art and you aren't even a full time MB resident
It's a pleasure to read all your MB intel

You will like this.
I emailed Wedgefield asking what kind of greens do they have now.
The owner/manager replied the tifdwarf greens from The Witch.
