That is a shame but I have to confess that I've never played River Oaks.

Hate to see any course close. Was supposed to play it one time in 1st round of World Am but was rained out, so I have never played it either.

It was in the air since some years. It was just a question of time. Another one gone.

I played it a few years ago. It was okay but not as good as most of the other courses that I have played in Myrtle Beach.

Probably going to be pretty unpleasant for the people who own condos there -- I've never been there, but it looks like most of the course is already lined with condos based on an aerial view. So they'll just be jamming more houses/condos into the hole corridors, and people with existing condos will have a view first of construction and then just development. They may lose some property value.

Building on River Oaks would affect people living in that area.
It's not a important golf package course, since it's not in demand
on golf packages and package tee times can be booked well in advance.
For the time being, losing more courses and adding more residents, will
affect local golfers the most, regarding tee time availability and maybe
higher rates.

I think if the golf package business declines, it's going to be more about
the higher prices from Dynamic Rates.  I am not talking about 10-15%
increases for inflation, but 50% increases when dynamic rates kick in.

I guess people with limited MB experience will want to live in the center
of MB, not realizing how congested that area is or will become.

Played there once, on my first mb trip back in 1988. Greens had fresh overseed sprouting & the grass was about 1" tall. It was like trying to put in 1" deep standing water.

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle.

Always felt River Oaks was a budget course for golfers with limited funds, only played it once and like the 2 nines we played, just never got back to it.

Sad news, even if I have never played there from some obvious reasons!

Another one bites the dust.

https://www.myhorrynews.com/news/local/carolina_forest/carolina-forest-golf-course-expected-to-become-housing/article_9bfb2ae0-1f6d-11ed-b483-772456079ae4.html

A letter from the GM:

There are no immediate plans to close River Oaks. Your fall and spring business will not be affected. The land owners are simply re-zoning as part of a long term plan.

River Oaks is in great shape and will be over seeded as planned this fall. Tees, Fairways, Greens, and Greens surrounds will be over seeded. We also are continuing to make improvements to the course. This summer we removed some bunkers in an effort to speed up play and make the customer experience more enjoyable. We had a few penalizing bunkers that the average golfer would find very difficult to recover from.  A new golf cart fleet also is expected to be delivered next spring. Our entire team appreciates all the support you have given us. We continue to strive to give your customers great service and experience at a value price.

Like Wizard, that area is so crowded, that rezoning may be denied or have to
wait until the road is widened.

Okay.  So the "bad" news is now maybe not so bad.  Hope it remains a golf course for many years.

Each time I drive by River Oaks there are people on the course and cars in the parking lot.  It knows where it fits into the MB golf scene and it was not a bad course at all the last time I played it.  Hoping it will stay open for a while yet!
