It was a beautiful day for golf, and my destination today was Eagle Nest. This course has been a long-time affair of mine—whenever I visit Myrtle Beach, I try to play there at least once during my stay. My expectations are usually quite modest, knowing Eagle Nest is not a premium course, but once again, I was pleasantly surprised. The course conditions were better than I anticipated.

Upon arrival, I was struck by the absence of green—none of the fairways or greens had been overseeded, leaving everything in shades of beige. Only the tee boxes were green, likely a cost-saving measure. However, with the warmth and sunshine, the grass was slowly coming back to life, and in a few weeks, the course would likely look summer-ready.

That said, three greens on the back nine were in poor condition, and overall, the greens were very slow. Adjusting to the pace was crucial to avoid leaving putts short.

My biggest disappointment was the pace of play. The front nine took us just two hours, but the back nine dragged on—we had to wait on every hole, and the round ended up taking over five hours. Overall, i do not regret to have played Eagle Nest. It was a very pleasant day of golf.

We played Eagles Nest on Monday, Feb 25 with a decent rate (for MB these days) of $41, booked thru the course website for a 1:06 tee time. Conditions were as S**h described above. Dormant grass everywhere, greens appeared to be painted.  I really didn't notice the greens were very slow,  but it was my first round since August due to back issues so they could have been terrible and I probably still would have been happy. Our pace of play was right on 4 hours, no complaints there. It was my first round in MB in 2 years, my last for another 4 years given the current situation.

Eagles Nest probably doesn't get enough package play to justify
overseeding and it's sister course Azalea Sands doesn't overseed also.

Without the overseed, they are probably losing some local play also.

Thanks for reporting.

@obblues

Glad to have news OBBlues. Sounds like you appreciated your round at Eagle’s Nest, all things considered. Glad to hear pace of play wasn’t an issue—that’s always a plus. The dormant grass and painted greens seem to be a common theme this time of year in MB, for many courses. Hopefully, your back held up well and you were able to just enjoy being back on the course after such a long break.

One detail I forgot to mention: work is currently underway on the cart paths. Workers are hauling dirt and gravel by truck to cover all the paths. However, this does not interfere with our game, as everything is being done safely for both golfers and workers.

I have made at least 30 trips to MB and EN is one of the courses I have never played.  Happy to learn more about it.

@artmbgolf Yes Art there are a lot of locals who do not play EN due to not over seeding. Many of the local groups and there are a lot have told EN the reason for not much winter play as there are many other options that do over seed. if they did the locals would come out in force to play it and surely cover the most of the cost of over seed.

@ziggygolfer  Glad to hear from you, ZiggyGolfer. Golfers prefer playing on overseeded fairways rather than dormant grass—I think it’s less discouraging. I try, if possible, to avoid dormant grass in the fairways and on greens. Painted greens is a compromise only.

I think it’s great they don’t overseed. Overseeding requires a lot of water and you get less roll out. The dormant Bermuda is fast and firm, which in my opinion is better than slow and mushy.

FWIW, they don’t overseed at Pinehurst
