Played Eagle Nest for the first time on Nov 2 (still exploring them all, as a local). Once again, the depth of MB golf options impresses me.

I have some opinions on Eagle Nest but many more questions for those who have played it in the past.

Do NOT buy the yardage book currently offered unless you just like them as souvenirs (like I do. Hell, I bought Farmstead and The Witch yardage books in their waning days). The book does not reflect the current course layout...and the carts have GPS!

Great staff inside and out of the clubhouse.

They are doing a lot of maintenance currently but it only effects play on #10 (where I assume they're installing new drainage).

I'm assuming the numerous revetted bunkers were not part of the original design and are foreign to the MB golf landscape. I loved the look they provide. Not sure if they dictate actual play but they frame some holes beautifully.

The website and scorecard highlight the "Perch"tees-which stretch EN to 8100 yards. Our group laughed at those visibly artificial teeing grounds on a lot of holes. #18 in particular was a joke.

Anyway, for those that played Eagle Nest pre-2017, can you recall the course? Do you like the improvements they've made?

Thanks Peter for reporting!

Did play there only once, three years ago (probably before they streched the course to its current yardage) and did appreciate my experience!

I have not seen the yardage book, but Eagle Nest has redone the bunkers
and upgraded the greens in recent years.

The layout is still the same as it was when the I guess old yardage book
was created, just the bunkers won't match it.  The bunkers are now
more modern.

I saw the Perch tees 2 years ago.  Are some still behind trees?
We can figure they are a marketing gimmick to get us talking.

I played Eagle Nest many times. The perch tees are just a marketing tool. I have never seen golfers on these perch tees. Very glad to learn that they are improving the drainage on the 10th hole. It was a problem on this hole after heavy rains. Thanks for your report. Very appreciated.

We have played EN several times, holes 9 and 10 always seemed wet/very soft, so they played longer.  The greens have always been better then decent, although a few have burnt marks from the mowing but do not come into play on the greens which are a good size.  Hoping to get there come dec. to see how those Perch look, 2 years ago we all felt it was a gimmick.

The day we played a lot of tees were placed in non-teeing areas, i.e., the push cart "alleys" but that was completely acceptable seeing that the course was in the process of improvements.

Art, do you mean the bunkers are "modern" by their technology? Revetted bunkers screams old school to me. They were adding/replacing sod to the top of many bunkers. We had fun trying to look back and find some of those perch tees during the round. Maybe the silliest is the 18th with twin trees beside the forward tee box. Website claims it is now the longest course in SC-at 8168 yds.

Thanks S***H. I was gonna ask if anyone had even SEEN players on some of those tees.

The only hole (improvement?) I questioned was the expanded sandy area short and right of the sixteenth green. It almost touches the pond.

I agree the EN bunkers are still an old looking style with new sand.
I can't say if they have drains to drain better.

I last played EN few years ago and saw them building the perch tees and
some were already done.  That day I didn't see any sign of running
irrigation to them, which would be a waste of water on tees not played.
The grasses on the slopes will tend to hide the, if they are brown.

Great points about the irrigation and "camouflage" of those tees Art. Now that I think about it, do you remember the access to those tees. From afar, some seemed to be open from a slope or ramp at the front of the perch only and I wonder if they could even be scaled if that ramp was the least bit soggy.

Eagles Nest now has the longest set of tees in the MB area...AND the shortest set of tees

Played EN on 11/05.  As noted, there is an abundance of work underway here; re-sodding many areas including tees, cart path extensions, new drainage areas, bunker surrounds and other worn spots.  Going into the winter, this repair work will take some time to mature.  It could be spring before the beneficial effects of the work will bear fruit.  EN is essentially the same layout with the LONG perch tees and bunker improvements being the notable differences from years ago.  The greens were OK, putted well and rolled smooth (although the overseed on the greens did cause some build up on the golf ball).  I still love the #18 as getting a par 3 for a finishing hole is rare but this hole is appealing to the eye and plays nicely (big green).  #16 & #17 are big boy golf, you need to get out the big stick and hit it on these holes.

@dch1950

The 16th and 17th hole are long. The 16th is harder to reach the green in regulation. For the 17th hole, it is easier. I like also the finishing hole (18th). It is fun to finish with a par on this par 3 hole. Thanks for reporting.

The last time I played Eagle Nest in the winter when the grass was dormant, they were using a speed roller on the greens regularly.  The result was a very slick, true putting surface.  I found it very enjoyable once you adjusted to the speed.  We have played the course on and off for over 40 years.  It is a good layout and enjoyable challenge.  It will never be a top 10 conditioned course in the area, but that is not their goal.  It is a fair value for the money and I will always recommend checking it out at least once.
