Tier two ?

I use a 5 tier system to rate golf courses. I look at the layout first. Is it challenging, is it fair, what are the shot values from the tee and into the greens, are the greens fair, rolling, sloped or basically flat and the typical condition of the greens first and then the course.

Here are some examples

Tier 1  The very top courses in the MB area Dunes, Surf Club, Kings North, all 4 Barefoot courses, Caledonia, True Blue, Cape Fear National, Wachesaw Private. 

Tier 2  Just a cut below the top Thistle, CC of South Carolina, River Hills (one of my favorites), Rivers Edge (would be tier 1 if it was in the condition of the tier 1 courses), Arrowhead. 

Tier 3  Great solid courses that can be played often and enjoyed. Interesting layouts in good condition. Arcadian Shores, River Club, Willbrook, Pearl, Crow Creek, Farmstead, Southcreek (many would put this in tier 4 but I love this course to play often) 

Tier 4 Good courses you will never regret playing - Man o War, MBN West, Witch, Meadowlands, Sea Trail (tier 3 but it's conditioning hasn't been up to snuff lately) 

Tier 5 Play when you want a cheaper round. Azalea Sands, Eastport, Brick Landing, Carolina Charters

Truly, there are few courses to stay away from, I play tier 4 courses often and they are great. It's a subjective system, Brian's is 9 tier's and it doesn't match mine - and there are times that courses will move up and down the tiers based on conditioning. This summer you had to be very picky as to where you were playing since many courses had serious issues with their greens, that affected their tier standings.
