We’ve played these courses the past couple of weeks. Beachwood is in good shape and the greens are very good. Azalea Sands is just the opposite. Fairways are not very good and the greens are okay but not as good as other courses we have played this winter. Pop on both courses was around 4 hours. Azalea had a full tee sheet Monday probably because of the beautiful weather.

Both of those courses have the old style bermuda greens, probably
overseeded now.

Do you think Azalea has become popular for budget/beginner play?
It's good that they have improved it.
Or is that where 48 hour card players end up after other popular
courses are full?

Thanks!

This post mirrors my experience with these two courses over the years--for those not familiar with them, located literally next door to each other. Beachwood seems managed by those who understand that a modest layout, well maintained and fairly priced, will always get business. In addition, the staff interactions I've had are always pleasant. There's nothing exceptional about Beachwood, but I've never found anything wrong with it either. For those who are double-digit handicaps or any golfer looking for a good warmup layout after leaving the clubs in the closet over a long winter, I think Beachwood is a solid recommendation.

On the other hand, Azalea has seemed a course without any direction. From the caddy girls to the pizza plate-sized holes, Azalea has always searched for a gimmick while ignoring course conditions and doing very little to improve a golfer's experience during his round. I've also had inconsistent staff interactions there with some employees being downright rude. It shouldn't take much to operate Azalea well, but over 8-10 plays of the layout for 30 years and no matter how low a greens fee I've paid, I've never walked off the 18th thinking that I've gotten my money's worth.

Because of all the golfers moving into the MB area courses are very full - even AS. AS is an average old school layout that just never seems to be in good condition  It's a course of last resort like Colonial Charters

Golf is just an excuse to drink whiskey and smoke cigars
