Finally played Azalea Sands for the first time.

Pro - The fastest golf carts I have ever ridden

Pace of play was 3 hours - standard pop is 3.5 even when busy

I've played a lot worse layouts, even in MB

         Great course to walk

        Has some decent holes

Great kid in the pro shop - his Dad is the pro at Diamondback

       Not a difficult course

CON - Got to be careful because the carts are so fast

Not in great condition, they don't over seed the fairways which were thin and wet

Some greens were fairly bare - they have put down more seed in those areas

           Need more good holes

Overall - it was better than I anticipated. This is a low end course and is not overly challenging. They are trying to recover from it's former owner who let it go down hill very badly. It will take a long time as the new operators don't have a lot of money to put into the course and not sure they have the desire.

I put it as a tier 5 - but if the conditions improve it could be tier 4.5 I would play it again before several other courses in MB. It's in a great location, cheap, and it plays very fast. That said, don't cancel your reservations at MBN or Barefoot.

So now you make me ask, what courses would you rank it ahead of? Do they still have the 8 inch holes as well?

Isn't this one of the oldest courses in Myrtle Beach?  Surprised it has not been bought and redeveloped into shopping or condos.   Nice pace of play.

Have to admit not one on my list of needing to play.  That said, I think it's a fair assessment of a course that's filling a need.  Hope they can improve it enough to stay open.

Azalea Sands shouldn't be on anyone's must play list. I like it better than Hackler, Eastport, Eagle Nest, haven't played Beechwood in 30 years (will get there soon) Carolina Shores, haven't played Indigo Creek, Colonial Charters off the top of my head. I give props for the guys trying hard, it reminds me of my course (which was far more challenging) as I had little income to make the improvements needed. (150k budget for pro shop and maintenance, 16 hour days for me). It has enough challenge for me to keep it sort of interesting. May go back and walk the course. Not sure why it isn't housing already - great location for it, easy to develop - perhaps it floods easily. If I had the money and my wife wouldn't leave me, 500k would go a long way to making it a tier 3 or4 on par with Possum Trot which is closing late 2019.

I have said that the Azalea Sands layout is decent, something like PT, Beachwood, Eagle Nest, but
the conditions have been terrible for years.   I am not aware of new owners, except for I think they
added East Coast Golf as management.

IMO Azalea Sands would have trouble beating out Col Charters, Eastport, Carolina Shores and
Brick Landing for the bottom.    BL got new greens this summer, no idea how good.
Eastport looks green driving by, owned by a turf/nursery company.

Thanks!

Hackler is in far better condition. I’m just not a fan of the course

Your evaluation of this golf course is correct. I agree that the layout is not too bad. But the conditions of play...

I think Brick Landing has to be the worst course in the Carolinas.

I think Brick Landing has to be the worst course in the Carolinas.

The Brick has been bad through several new owners who were going to bring it back.
They supposedly got new Sunday greens in 2018.  I wonder how good a job they did and if
they improved anything else?
