Greetings!
Weather: sunny with a few clouds, 78 degrees.
Looking for a sure bet when it comes to playing at least one of the top-rated courses in Myrtle Beach? If so, you can definitely bet on the King's North course, an Arnold Palmer design opened in 1973, which underwent major transformations in 1996, and whose front nine holes were just completely renovated no later than between June and October 2024. See scorecard at https://www.myrtlebeachnational.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/MBN-Kings-North_5x12_Sept-2021-1.pdf .
This course is located just off Highway 501, about 15 minutes from downtown Myrtle Beach, within a complex that includes two other budget-priced courses, MBN West and MBN Southcreek (two other great options for starting a golf trip here).
What we appreciate the most King's North, in addition to playing conditions that are top level most of the time (and they still were today, please believe us) is the variety of holes that are offered. No hole is boring and no matter the tee boxes from which you play your round, the fun will be waiting for you.
King's North is "generous" with wide fairways, but the obstacles (mainly sand traps and some water here and there) are located at very strategic locations. The golfers who like to take risks will be pretty well served with the # 6 hole, called “The "Gambler". This is a par 5 that plays approximately 500 yards from the white markers, and from the tee, you have the option of using a "shortcut" that is somehow a relatively long island ... but a narrow one. If your tee shot managed to stay on the famous island, you then remain between 150 and 200 yards to reach the green in two ... a green that is wide, rather than deep. Believe us, a very nice challenge ahead!
There is also hole #12, a par 3 that takes you to hit your tee shot on an island. If you go too much to your right ... you'll be in the water! Too far left and you will find yourself in one of two sand traps that will require from you a perfect second shot!
Finally, know that your journey will end with a par 4... with 40 sand traps to go through. The secret to avoid them? Hitting the center of the fairway or on the right side of it!
In any case, if you choose King's North in one of your next golf packages, you'll pick a winner! And it's a cut above all the other courses we've played so far during our current stay in Myrtle Beach!
Next round on Wednesday May 7 at Rivers Edge!
