They are talking about pros and low handicappers, that depend on spin and play firm greens.
Pros practice so much that they will put more wear on per round and they probably hit
a bunch of SW shots on the range and short game area before every round. If we have
time to warm up, most of us probably don't hit them before a round.
If I warm up for a round, I don't hit any SW shots, unless I am hitting some chip shots.
On the course, I only use the LW in the sand, so it will wear faster than the others.
So I don't feel you need to buy a set of SWs, every time one of them is beat up.
Replace them one at a time as desired.
And we have to be using a performance ball that the SW can spin.

I replace my Wedges yearly. Seeing i practice 5 days a week and Play 3 times a week. So i feel i want that fresh feel.
