On a nice but windy day, (15 -20) made the trek out to Carolina National - hadn't played there in 3 years. A really good layout of 27 holes - we saw them all as pace of play was quick. 3.30 for 18 and 1.30 for the last nine. They had a special for $45 including an excellent lunch and 2 beers - a great burger there. Off the path on all but a couple of holes, CN is very challenging, greens rolled 10.5 to 11 and pretty smooth (painted). Lots of undulations.
No over seed anywhere. I wish they would have over seeded the fairways so you could see the definition, really took away from the beauty of the course. Lies were very tight in the fairway, no way to play the ball down. Be prepared to require a back adjustment by the time you finish. Concrete cart paths that will jar you all the way around - we got off the path as soon as possible. There are some great holes here including a very awesome par 3 in the marsh. Nice crew at the bag drop, the new head pro Jeff Phieffer used to be the assistant at Bald Head and is happy to not be taking a boat ride twice a day. As far north as CN is, it's actually closer to me than PP, and Caledonia. I will be going back after the course greens up this spring.

Thanks for sharing those pics of CN and for your update UGP! As we can see, there is no overseed on the course. Very different of all the wall to wall overseeded golf courses. But a good design. The par 3 in the marsh is a very good and challenging hole.

Thanks for the update UGP, I to have 4 Group Golfer vouchers for the same deal, we have friends coming in who love the course as does my wife, I Don't Like What I'm seeing, it's very difficult to spot your ball on dormant rough let alone an entire course, and tight lies are my nemesis, I'll probably be drinking more than those two beers ????

For fun we tried it from the tips - took a soft driver down wind!!

It was a two flask day for me!

Funny, I know the hole you're talking about, not a whole lot of room for error on that one.

Try a yellow ball next time - it's a little easier to see.

Thanks for the report . Been waiting for this one. . The last time I played Carolina National was about three years ago. And the reason I haven't gone back is because of the cart paths. They are the worst I have ever seen actually ..I liked the course ..it is really nice.... I'm just waiting for them to fix the cart paths before I go back.
Great pictures.

I thin you'll be waiting a very long time as they are concrete.

And what is a soft driver UGP?
Needed to fly it about 215 which would have been a full swing for me but it was down wind so hit high and let the wind carry it.Two ways to hit a soft driver - a 3/4 swing or leave the head cover on.

I prefer the last option ???? ????

Nice course, underrated design in my opinion. Some really excellent holes. Looks a little weird without overseed/green fairways.
Thanks for the report UGP. Have not played CN in about four or five years.
Thanks UGP!
The last time I played CN was a few (too many) years ago!
With your topo, you're making me anxious to be back!
