Thanks for the link Art. Blondin made reference to an article of the Post and Courier of Charleston: https://www.postandcourier.com/business/myrtle-beach-closes-in-on-a-deal-to-host-a-pga-event-starting-in-2024/article_10967428-a8a2-11ed-a45d-03164e03ca4a.html

May would be a good fit. April and May would be great for a tournament. Many golfers come in MB during these months for to play golf. At the same time, they would have the chance to see a PGA Tour event.

Very prestigious to host a Tour event.  It is quite a commitment as the course can be closed for up to a month leading into the tournament for preparation.  Can also be a lot of damage to the course from all the equipment, bleachers, fans, etc... taking its toll.

One complaint back when the SR Tour was in MB, was that there weren't
enough volunteers.    I agree with others that TPC, BF Dye or The Dunes
would be good choices and challenging enough.

One article mentioned Feb or March.    Weather is too iffy then.
I doubt MB would want to give up Mid-March through first week of May,
but it is only 1 course, who would make up for lost play with
tournament $$.   The date will also depend on where there is an
opening in the PGA tour schedule.  It also might be opposite, just
before/after a big tournament, meaning fewer big names will be there.

I think MB would prefer The Dunes, so they can show the ocean, for
a better advertisement.   No matter the course, shuttles will be needed
for the parking.  It would be interesting if the date is around our dates,
either to attend or to play the course before or after.

I agree with Art about the Dunes being choice of course.  Wonder if they would want to put up with the hassle that goes with holding such a tournament.  BrewCrew is right about damage.

Those that run the Dunes wants to have the PGA event there, however there are a lot of logistical issues. Practice area is not deep enough, players can easily hit over the net into the 8th hole. So they would need to be shuttled back and forth to the Grande Dunes members club for practicing full shots. There's really no place on the 18th hole for grandstands, galleries and scoreboards. Parking would be a royal cluster mess. Members arriving after 11am on a typical weekend have a hard time finding parking, lol. Can't imagine how bad the parking would be for a tour event. While the Dunes may have the most prolific course for a PGA event, for those logistical reasons I think TPC or BF Dye would be better choices.

I am one who sees TPC as the only possible course in MB that could host a PGA Event, IMO Dunes is to short, Bob covered the other issues Dunes has.  Not sure if the people would come out to see the Big Boys play, most come to MB area to golf not watch golf.

@leftygar1 A PGA tournament is a draw.  Depending on the time of year, I can see guys planning their golf trip to coincide with the tournament so they can golf and take in the pros.  I can also see it pulling in fans from Wilmington, Columbia in addition to the locals.

1Putt1 has a good point that The Dunes #18 can't have many
plans for a last hole.

MB has a lot more residents than 22 years ago when the SR tour
was in town.  Plus it's the real tour, although it's likely to be a less
popular event right after a big tournament or opposite of a big
tournament.

One complaint back when the SR tour was in MB was getting
enough volunteers.  That should be easier now.

Regardless of the course, busing people from a mall type parking
lot will be needed.

@brewcrew

You are most likely correct, I just recall the Senior Tour Championship and very thin crowds each year it was in MB.

Heard today it's a 99.99% done deal that the Dunes will host the PGA tour event. A PGA Tour official went around the course yesterday and made a punch list of several items they need and would like to have. The tournament will be held a week before the PGA championship next May. They will bring in a portable net on cranes for the end of the driving range instead of using the practice facility at the Members Club. Also heard is they will shave more banks around the greens so balls roll off to collection areas (or into water) instead of being held up by rough.

Do you know any items that the tour wants?

The shaved banks on some Dunes greens will run the ball far off.

Will the entire MB be considered the sponsor.

The 2024 PGA is tentatively scheduled for May 13-19.

Any idea how long before the tournament will package play be stopped?

That means the tournament would be on May 9th to 12th with events probably kicking off on the Monday May 6th for practice/any pro am etc.

Presume the course will be closed to outside play a good 2/3 weeks before the tournament and possibly well before that given it’s primarily a members course so that will probably rule it out for most of the Spring trip cycle at best.

We usually come to MB in late April so it won’t be an option for us next year.
