Good conditions and a fun layout at Sea Trail. I prefer the Jones to the Byrd but have yet to play the Maples course.

I really like the variety of holes on the Jones as no holes feel too similar to the others. A good mix of dog legs, straight holes with a variety on the par 3's as well.

Some of the better holes include #5 mid length par 3 all carry over water and #10 which is a short 300 yard par 4 risk reward par 4 which runs from left to right over water. Bite off as much as you can chew but need to be leery of bunkers running up the right side of the fairway waiting to catch your ball. #18 is a nice par 5 dog leg right finisher where big hitters have the opportunity to reach in 2 with a nice drive. I came up about 30 yards short but did get up and down for Birdie to finish on a high note.

Conditions were generally good. It was CPO but really only wet in a few spots and still got some run on the tee shots. Mud balls were not an issue. I played in the afternoon so maybe this was more of an issue in the morning. A couple of tee boxes were thin and and some of the rough was a little bare but no major issues. Greens were aerated a few weeks ago and rolled fine at a medium speed. The course was pretty full and we played in about 4 hours not waiting on too many shots.

I'd certainly play here again.

Thank mperna.

Haven't played here in 8 years.

Gotta go check out all 3 courses someday.

Another great update @mperna2001, thank you!

Have played ST Jones only once... way too many years ago!

I'll have to be back! 😉

One of the better layouts in MB - certainly not an easy course. Was pleased by the conditions last time I played there and will go again in the near future

thanks for the report. havent played any of the sea trail courses because a player i was paired with while in pinehurst told me they were generally maintained as "goat tracks"-and she lives there!

anyone care to list their order of preference of the courses?

i had heard the same for many years and didnt venture out there to play until last year when i started seeing some positive reports and I was not disappointed. I haven't played Maples yet so cant speak of it but would without a doubt take the Jones course over the Byrd based on my round last week. It's a much more creative layout in my humble opinion.

@say8pet

Maples, Jones, Byrd if just speaking of the design.  All three are good layouts.

Sea Trail had gone downhill a number if years ago.   It was then sold and the new
owner was slow to make any improvements.  Jones has new greens.
Byrd previously had new greens.  Maples still has old bermuda infested bent
greens.

My thought is ST is a good deal at Passport/Local rates, but nothing special or
interesting for a group, if paying $80-$100 spring PKG rates.

I like Maples a little more for more unique holes.
Jones is the more championship design, but other than a few holes, isn't
very unique.  Byrd is 3rd for me, but there isn't much of a gap between
the courses.  It's not like choosing between the MBN or Big cat courses, that
have a mix of premium and mid courses.

At Sea Trail, like Art, my choice is Maples. Some very special holes on this course. Very scenic.

Thanks for your take on the Jones course, a favorite of mine.
