Looks like nobody wants to buy and renovate the course.

Maybe those who stayed members of the low cost cow pasture, voted
against the rezoning.

Back in the 90's Carolina Shores was always a go to course for our annual late winter or early spring trip, conditions were better then average, greens were good, and the course was always filled.  Over time and with a new owner the conditions dropped dramatically.  Last time I played it was with Art after they removed or reduced in size many sand traps, course was then starting to go down hill, never returned after that last round and driving by it over the years it always looked like a dry dust bowl.

Reviews from recent years consistently describe it as overgrown, weedy fairways, patchy or dirt-like greens, and overall neglected, often called one of the worst in the Myrtle area. Many folks stopped going back for the same reasons you did, and it looked like a dust bowl from the road too.

I try to picture what Carolina Shores was trying to do.
Maybe spend near nothing on maint, while collecting a bit of $
from community golfers looking for a cheap practice round,
cheap membership and/or the occasional Golfnow sucker.
Keeping the course open may have allowed them to make some
$$ with the restaurant.

Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club, designed by Tom Jackson, opened in 1974. At this time, it featured a classic layout through woods and pines, with amenities like a clubhouse, pool, and tennis courts, catering mainly to locals and budget golfers. Conditions deteriorated significantly after a change in ownership around 2011–2013, due to reduced maintenance and investment amid financial struggles, especially post-COVID. Fairways became weedy, greens slowed, and upkeep faltered, making it unappealing and unprofitable. The course survived on inexpensive local rates, membership dues, and occasional unsuspecting visitors, but it was widely written off by serious golfers due to these issues. The course closed permanently in November 2024.

Sad to read about courses closing but I understand it is a real difficult business to be in.
