If you could only play either True Blue or Caledonia which would you pick and why?

I can only sneak one round in that far from where we're staying.

Thanks!

Choosing between Caledonia and True Blue  depends on what you’re looking for in your experience. Both courses, designed by Mike Strantz, are exceptional.

Caledonia is often described as a work of art, emphasizing precision over power. The setting is enchanting: ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss, picturesque marshes, and an authentic Lowcountry feel. If you love strategic, visually stunning courses steeped in history (it’s built on a former rice plantation), Caledonia might be your pick.

True Blue, on the other hand, is bolder and more expansive. It has a more modern, rugged appeal, with challenges that reward long hitters and creative players. If you prefer a more physical test of golf with room to play and a sense of grandeur, True Blue might appeal to you more.

My choice would be Caledonia. That said, you can’t go wrong with True Blue. It all comes down to your playing style and aesthetic preferences!

I think Caledonia is a better course. True Blue is solid, but, at least to me, it's kind of a lesser version of other Strantz courses like Tobacco Road or Bulls Bay whereas Caledonia is its own thing.

My group stays central, so like you I only plan 1 far South course.

True Blue has a range, which you can use if playing Caledonia, if
that is a must.   While both are Stranz designs, TB has a Pete Dye look,
while Caledonia is more of a country club look.

Both are winners, but I feel Caledonia would be preferred by more of
a group.  The drive into Cale can be nice enough to break the tie.

If you are a 36 hole group, play Cale in the AM and get a replay rate
at TB.

@artmbgolf thanks for the reply. How much time is needed to go to range at TB from Cale but still have enough time to hit some putts and chips at cale?

I am a TB person but I also love Caledonia.O me Caledonia is more a shot makers course that you really have to think about each shot. I do like that the range is a TB which is more convenient.

I don't think you will be upset at either one.

When you drive down 17 and enter the road to Cal/TB you pass TB first, so TB
is not out of the way.   From TB to Cal it's only about 5 minutes.

If you are not booked yet, check the tee times on the Cal/TB site, to see what
is available.  They are popular.  That may affect your choice.
If driving an hour to get there, it can be more relaxing to play PM.

Played Caledonia on 03/12/2025, this place is always impressive; the drive in with all the live oak canopy, views from #18, the greenside porch from the grille room, the spicey seafood chowder at the turn, the fun practice area, and so many interesting holes.  The fairways & tees were in excellent shape; the greens - not so much - as they were bumpy, thin, lightly top dressed, and not top quality (it's what you expect for this venue).  Not sure if Mother Nature caused an issue here with the adverse weather back in January.  But, it's still a real fun place.  Definitely my choice over True Blue.  It's often ranked #1 or #2 for a resason.

Only played three holes at True Blue before being rained out.  Will play it again this fall (as well as Caledonia) so I'll go with Caledonia by default since I've played all 18.

I played caledonia today and was a little disappointed in the conditioning but not the layout. Especially at the rate they charge. The two guys i played with say true blue is in better shape.

Layout and scenery is great though. I think i only hit my driver on the par 5s and a couple par 4s. Definitely requires some thinking so you dont end up in a bad spot.

The bunkers were on awful shape, my muni has better maintained bunkers. Some greens your ball would pick up so much mud on a putt there would be a ring of mud around ball.
