I have a client who is looking to change courses. He said his friends played there over the summer and again recently. They mentioned the course was in poor condition and wanted to change their April round. Now i'm a customer satisfaction guy and felt the need to explain that summer conditons are different that Spring conditions.
((I had MCSkip came down for his birthday , he has always came here in the Spring. He was confused this Summer with playing on the grass the course were designed to be played on. it baffled him a few times.))
I have no hidden agenda or financial stake in a client playing one course over another. Here is my note to the client:
If you don’t mind, let me share some knowledge on how Myrtle Beach grass works. I like to have informed guests …
Myrtle Beach is in a temperate climate. We cannot sustain Bermuda grass year round, it goes dormant in late October. So we overseed with Winter Rye to make sure our courses are bright green and in good shape for all of our Winter and Spring golfers. When you play golf in Myrtle Beach from late October through May you are playing golf on Winter Rye Overseed. In late May/June the courses spray out the Winter Rye, aerify the entire golf course, fertilize and that spurs on the Bermuda exit dormancy and to grow. Commonly referred to as “transition”. Consequently, if you’re playing golf in May to October, you’re playing golf on Bermuda grass (319 fairways and 412 rough). When we have condition issues here at the beach, it’s typically June/July due to the transition back to Bermuda.
March, April and 1st half of May is our busiest time frame, we play more rounds of golf in the 2.5 months than we play the rest of the year combined. That is why we overseed to give the best possible conditions to our visiting Spring golfers who are here in our Peak season and paying the highest rate. Our Destination can’t afford THINK we’ll be in good shape the Spring, we HAVE to be in good shape in the Spring. Spring conditions and summer conditions are 2 totally different things. In Spring your ball will bounce and check, in the summer it will bounce and roll out 10-15 feet. That’s the difference in overseeded greens and summer greens.

Some not understanding maintenance will report bad greens, when
they are aerated, or bad fairways when just shaved and overseeded.
In April I don't find a need to check on maint/conditions, other than
to monitor reports of a course with problems.
