According to what I heard - Black Bear was a screw up by a Chinese couple that bought the course but knew nothing about golf. Then they screwed up the sale of the course - and the rest is history.

At one time Black Bear/Myrtle West was a pleasant, decently maintained golf course with little housing around it.  Then I guess new owners let it fall into disrepair and things went downhill.  I understand the economics of golf and the closing of facilities but you hate to see "old friends" go by the wayside.

Black Bear had fallen into disrepair.  The Chinese family that bought Black Bear
apparently let it get worse.

I never heard if Black Bear flooded like Aberdeen does, but BB has been closed
during the last 2 floods.    Aberdeen gets more coverage by news, since it has housing.

Over 10 years ago they said Rt 9 was the next growth area, but it hasn't changed too much
out past Long Bay golf course.

I wonder is housing will sell if it's next to a RV Park and with the noise from ATV and
Go-Carts.

Thanks for posting the link.   I had no hope that BB would return as a golf course.

A friend that was close to the potential buyer said he had it all set up to go and keep it a course - but they screwed it up. While not the best course in MB - I always found it serviceable as Myrtle West and played it several times. The last pro there is now at Diamondback and a great deal happier.

Was Black Bear also known as Buck Creek for awhile or am I imagining that?

I think Myrtle West became The Gauntlet, then Black Bear.

Buck Creek became Aberdeen.

I am pretty sure The Gauntlet was the first name of what is now called The Founders Club of St. James Plantation. Buck Creek is now called Aberdeen and Black Bear used to be called Myrtle West. While Black Bear was never in pristine condition the layout was certainly serviceable. I hate to see any course closings but realize that over 100 courses in the market were too many for all to remain profitable.

That's it. Buck Creek became Aberdeen.  Thanks for the reminder.

Correct, Founders at St James started as The Gauntlet.  There were 2 Gauntlets for a few years.
I don't know if they were the same owners or not.

Ploots has it correct - The Gauntlet is now the Founders Club at St James Plantation.   GDZ
