Hi There - new to this forum so first post.
I live in New Zealand and have a group of 5 guys coming to the US for 2 weeks playing golf starting in Streamsong and heading up to Myrtle Beach - playing courses along the way. We are all single figure handicaps. We have been to the US a few times but have not played in Myrtle Beach before so looking for some confirmations from what we have researched and taking into account course conditions in early June. We dont mind driving to get to a course and not that worried about the cost giving how far we are travelling - just want to play the best courses.
We are thinking of 4 days playing golf in Myrtle and looking to play 36 holes on 2 of those days. The courses - so 6 courses. We are trying to choose from are:
Caledonia Golf and Fish Club
True Blue
Dunes Golf & Beach Club
Barefoot Dye
Barefoot Fazio
Grande Dunes Resort Course
Tidewater
TPC Myrtle Beach
Thoughts greatly appreciated - and if we have missed off a gem let me know.
For accommodation our golf tour booking firm has recommended The Marina Inn at Grande Dunes - thoughts on this?
Thanks heaps.
Matt
Welcome to the forum.
You really can't go wrong with any of the courses on your list.
If you haven't booked yet, I would strongly reccomend you call Brian, ( use the link at the top of the page)
He is a valuable resource when planning a trip & always up on current course conditions.
Give him a call, you'll be glad did.
Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle.
Welcome to the forum...I've never played golf in Myrtle in the summer but I can guarrante you it will be somewhere between 80-95 and humid, so prepare for that, I'm thinking the transition from winter rye to bermuda should be about over, and as skippy said you can't go wrong with any of your choices and I would definitely contact Brian for arranging your trip...If your looking to play 36 one day I would recommend Fazio and Dye, the clubhouses are separate but only 10 minutes apart, I'm sure more knowledgeable members here will chime in with more useful information...if a rainy day occurs try the New South Brewery tour, great fun, good beer, and I believe it's $14 per person...Have a great trip!
Your list of courses is great. If I'm traveling to Myrtle Beach from about as far away as one can be, I'm wanting good conditions and good greens (I want that anyway and I live here)! Brian is a good resource to help you. Keep an eye on the reports as well.
You would also likely be happy to add Prestwick or Rivers Edge to your list. It's pretty hard to go wrong here.
Hi,
for your 36 holes day I would go Caledonia-TPC and Grande Dunes- The Dunes.
And for the two other rounds, I would go Bald head Island and Tidewater (if condition are good)
Brian can get you a good deal for Bald head Island

You can expect good conditions in June, but you must research, or let Brian tell
you, who is Aerating Greens during or soon prior to your trip. That could affect
a couple course selections. There are more than 6 must plays, so having a list
like yours ready will be good. You will need a golf packager to book
the private The Dunes. All in your list are top 10.
Marina Inn looks like a premium place and a good location to tour MB.
From there, it's about an hour drive to Caledonia + True Blue, so make
that one of your 36 hole days, so you don't do that drive twice.
If one of them is aerated, pair the other with Heritage or TPC on the way
back to your room.
BF Fazio + BF Dye is convenient for a 36 hole day. If one is aerated,
play BF Love.
Distance is close enough to pair The Dunes with Grande Dunes or any of those
2 with a Barefoot course.
Your Top Priority should be playing: Caledonia, The Dunes, Tidewater.

June is a tricky time for a Myrtle Beach visit as most courses go through a transition period. Difficult part will be to play courses that haven't aerated the greens recently. The last thing you'd want is to fly 18 hours and play on greens that have holes in them. You'll want to allow a minimum of 14 days after the aeration for the greens to heal before playing there.
If you play at Barefoot, there will always be 1-2 courses that either haven't aerated yet or have already healed. So playing two of these courses would be a very good choice. Grande Dunes would also be a good choice as they have very large greens and typically only aerate half of each green at a time, then after that's healed they aerate the other half (and they put the pin spots on the section that's healed).
Here's when some of the courses on your list aerated in 2019 just to give you an idea, however they do vary somewhat year-to-year:
Barefoot Fazio June 12th.
Barefoot Dye June 19th.
Barefoot Norman July 10th.
Barefoot Love July 24th.
TPC June 17th.
Caledonia June 17th.
True Blue June 10th.
Bald Head May 18th.
Tidewater Aug 1st.
Normally the Dunes Club is in outstanding condition and the layout is among the best in Myrtle Beach. However in June they struggle not only with greens aeration but they also topdress the fairways with lots of sand while the overseed is killed off. I'm a member there and last June conditions were pretty bad. So you may want to scratch this off the list given the timing of your trip.
You won't be disappointed staying at Grande Dunes Marina Inn.
I would play the Dunes regardless - the top course in MB. As a fan of Palmer designs, I would replace BF with Kings North and Rivers Edge. And I would replace TPC with Surf Club.
You can't go wrong with any on your list for the layouts - 1putt1 was kind enough to list the aeration schedule - June is a brutal month for conditions in MB due to several factors - the main one is that the busy season has just wrapped up so the courses are playing catch up with aeration and killing off winter rye.

On your drive up - here's a sleeper course for you. Brunswick CC in Brunswick, GA An old Donald Ross design
Also - keep us informed of your progress. The one advantage to June is it's pretty easy to change courses at the last minute.

If you consider Bald Head Island then you might just want to play as much as you like there for one day (That's the way the rate has been). Considering the drive and ferry ride to and from the island, it is not easy to get to.
As mentioned, I'd talk to Brian.
An option for a 36 hole day would be Tidewater & Surf Club ....as you will have a 10 minute drive .

Tough to beat that line-up, Bald Head was a real gem I would add that to the list. A fantastic full day experience starting with the ferry ride to the island.
We have a trip planned for June and all of these comments on the conditions have me concerned. We have not booked the trip yet, should we try to come in July instead?
Please check with the expert - Brian He can be reached on this site.

My group has been coming first week of June for the past 7 years. We have not had any issues. Brian has called and moved us to a different course do to a issue maybe twice in the past 18 years of coming in June. The weather in June is better than July not as humid. Brian is who you need to book with if their are issue anywhere he can make it right.
