Wife and I are looking into coming to MB for 7-10 days in near future. Will look to play 5-7 booked rounds and then add any if we feel like/availability allows. We are 60 and I carry a 12-15 HC (probably 20 since I haven't touched a club all winter ???? ) and wife is not long but keeps everything in play. We like to play well maintained (playable) courses with scenery a +. My question is what are some of the courses (say 5) that would be recommended that would fit this bill? They don't have to be all high end because we just enjoy playing nice courses. Not interested in tricked up courses where you have to carry 225yds all day, or blind shots everywhere. Also what would be a couple of the "must play" courses in MB area?

We do not have dates set or area we will be staying but we don't mind driving 30-45 mins to go play. If there is a recommendation on area (north, central, south) that is better than the other as far as financially and golf course wise, that is welcome too.

Thanks for any input!

With your first lineup, you are starting off with forgiving courses the first 3 rounds.

Myrtle Beach National West
Myrtlewood - PineHills
The Wizard Golf Club
Long Bay Golf Club
Aberdeen Country Club
Tidewater Golf Club
Myrtle Beach National King's North

Did you pick these courses from our recommendations?

At a lot of the MB courses, your are going to have some carries over
water/bunkers, so you can create your own drop areas.

If you have 5 Founders courses to get a gift card, you still aren't saving much and
end up paying for half of the gift card with increased golf rates.  To enhance it,
Replace Aberdeen + Long Bay with 2 of: Grande Dunes, Willbrook, Wild Wing.

Long Bay might be tough on the wife, if not able to carry onto the greens.
Heritage would be a great update, replacing Long Bay, Aberdeen or Wizard.

The Legends package is a good deal with the included food and free round.
It comes with crowds and the potential for slow play.

If this is going to be a yearly trip, look at course websites and compare with
recommendations.   If possibly a one time MB trip, pick the courses you want,
rather than rely on a canned group of courses.

As always, Art's comments are very helpful. I would second replacing Aberdeen and Long Bay with Grande Dunes and Willbrook. That would be a great upgrade.

MBN West is a good opening round course to warm up on. I'd be very happy with a trip that was
MBN West
Tidewater
MBN Kings North
Willbrook and
Grande Dunes.

I don't know how many Founders group courses you need to play to get the best package rate, but if you could swap out one or both of Myrtlewood and/or the Wizard for Heritage and/or Oyster Bay I would do that. If not, you said you might be looking for extra courses while you're there, I'd try to get on Heritage or Oyster Bay, They are fun to play. relatively inexpensive and very scenic

Welcome to the site.

For scenery, I would put Tidewater at or near the top of the list.  Glen Dornach along the intracoastal is also a good choice.  Both of these are at the northern end.  Another personal favorite at the southern end is Heritage.  Love the old plantation style course with the spanish moss hanging off of the trees.

For what I consider the scenic MB courses, above are a start,  add Rivers Edge, up north a bit in North Carolina,  Pawleys Plantation, Willbrook, River Club on the south end,  In the central area you could check out Arcadian Shores, Pine Lakes, ArrowHead, 3 courses at Myrtle Beach National, Prestwick.  Look at recent trip reports for courses given good condition reviews.

Think about if you want to stay at a golf course condo, upscale Marriott, or
one of the many typical hotels along the beach.  Central areas, not downtown,
will help you be near everything and you can drive 45-60 minutes to far north
or south courses.

Some that fit your criteria are:    Arrowhead, Wild Wing, Willbrook, Thistle,
The Pearl, Meadowlands.

Good budget: River Hills, MBN West(forgiving 1st day course).

Scenic:  Already suggested above.

Upscale: Caledonia, Grande Dunes, Barefoot Resort.

Select your lodging and your potential course list and we
can comment if any are possible mistakes.

Another 5 round package was Heritage, Heathland, moorland, oyster bay, and Parkland......bring on the comments!

@hoppy63 If you're going during prime package season, I might suggest avoiding the 3 primary Legends courses. A little too much of a golf factory in my opinion. I do like Heritage and OB however.

For me I would play Arrowhead, Kings North, Thistle , Tidewater and MBN West!

Brownwood Bandit

Several tough courses on your list. Fun?  WBN West and South, Beachwood, Wild Wing (no forced carries), Meadowlands. Scenic - Rivers Edge with some tough carries. MBN North - carry over water A LOT but what a layout.

Getting it narrowed down. Gonna finalize this weekend. One more lineup from another quote....

MBN-WEST

MB-South Creek

MBN-Kings

Arrowhead

Prestwick

Pine Lakes

Wild Wings-Avocet

I have several courses in mind from suggestions in forum I'd like to play, Heritage, Tidewater, Grand Dunes etc.....just curious from this lineup which courses you would change to add a couple of those others?

MBN-WEST An ideal forgiving first day course.
MBN-South Creek Could replace if adding a wow factor course.
MBN-Kings Great choice. Will have more water + sand.
Arrowhead Good Choice.
Prestwick This is a Dye course, with well protected greens, needing height + spin.
Pine Lakes Like an old country club style.
Wild Wings-Avocet Good.

These 3 you want are top 10ish in MB. Heritage, Tidewater, Grand Dunes
Your lineup is good, but any of those 3 will make it better.
IE Grande Dunes in place of MBN South. TW in place of Prestwick.
Heritage in place of Pine Lakes.

Everyone plays with their lineup to try to make it fit their criteria.
Also check courses out on their websites.

I like the addition of Arrowhead.  MBN West and South are courses that you could easily swap out and not feel like you're missing out.

IMO, Pine Lakes probably gets by more on its tradition as opposed to the actual golf experience it delivers these days.

I thank everyone for their response. After doing some research on courses and talking with package specialist about courses and "best rates" here is what we decided on....

MBN- Kings

Arrowhead

Prestwick

Pine Lakes

Wild Wing

Tidewater

Grande Dunes

I will report on trip upon return. Thanks again for all the input!
