And so it begins, the Forum Outing 2013 (at least for Jeff and I). We actually left last night after work, stopping around 2am in Gettysburg, PA around 2am. With about 6 hours sleep and a Sausage and Egg McMuffin in our bellies, we got back on the road and headed to Haymarket, VA and the Piedmont Golf Club for our 11:30 tee time. Highway 15 down to Haymarket was really busy with a bike race holding up traffic, and a slow drive through Leesburg. We made it to the course just in time!
We have played this course a few years back, and it didn’t disappoint. They’ve done some work on the bunkering, and the greens were running very nicely. The fairway bunkers were in full display with their red sand daring you to hit over them. I started slow, bogeying the first few holes until a birdie on the first par 3. Jeff struggled on the first two holes, however he picked it up nicely until the last two holes where he struggled again. I had a bit more trouble on the back with 3 doubles to go with my single double on the front. Still I shot 42-43 for an 85 and did not lose a ball. I was also much happier with my drives on the back nine. My big trouble was my wedges from 100 yards that I hit fat, fat, fat. Two doubles after attempting to hit my approach from 100 yards (99 actually in both cases).
The front nine zipped along nicely, finishing up in about 2 hours. The back started to drag, and we finished up in 4.5 hours which doesn’t sound bad, however the foursome ahead of us was more than a hole behind by the time we finished the round. The approach into the 18th green has a beautiful view of the clubhouse, as shown in the picture to the left, and is well protected by traps.
All in all it was a great day. It started to sprinkle a bit on the last couple of holes, however the rain held off until after we finished having a bite to eat at Famous Dave’s in Fredericksburg and were on our way to the hotel in Chesapeake. Tomorrow looks like great weather, however it will be an early day as we have an early tee time on the Outer Banks.
