MYRTLE BEACH -- GROUP TRIP REPORT 5/3-5/8, 2026

COMMENT: Earlier I posted my single days report.

SPRING GROUP PHASE: I have been going to MB since 1978. We started this group
with all East coast guys PA/NJ/DE in 1998. One guy invited his brother from CA, who later
invited some CA friends. We grew to as many as 16. Lately we have had around 12 on the trip.
This trip we had 12.

Sunday 5/3 -- RIVERS EDGE:
New owner has enhanced everything but the greens. Clubhouse: Great renovations.
Carts: Plush. Staff: Very nice. Tees, fairways, bunkers: Very good condition.
Range balls included. Overseed was wall to wall and hardly any sign of drought.
Greens: Have many fairway bermuda spots, some 50% or more fairway bermuda
grass, which is like putting on the old 1980's tifdwarf greens, with grain.
HOWEVER, This Trip is the First Time I have seen some speed on the greens since
they had bent when it opened. They actually cut the greens lower.
Due to challenge, 5 hour rounds may be common at RE. RE does have 10 minute
tee times and single tees. Lots of golfers can't decide what to do on #9, taking
way too long to play it.

Monday 5/4 -- THISTLE:
Range balls provided. Played Mackay/Cameron.
Both are renovated. The new greens are in good condition with medium speed
and are larger. The Stewart/MacKay combo is the most interesting + challenging 9's.
There is little housing in play, but more are being built. Conditions were very good everywhere.
The stacked astro turf sod bunker walls look nice, but they can be unplayable if close to
them. A new outside snack bar has been added for on the turn.

Tuesday 5/5 -- GRANDE DUNES:
Range balls provided, GPS on carts. The new greens in 2022 are very good,
smooth + fast.
The restaurant + pro shop are also renovated. More upscale than previous.
The greens have many pin position choices and the wide fairways allow playing
position or just letting it rip. When you play the proper tees here, there are 5-6 holes
where you can carry it to the fairway downslope, to get bonus yards. The waterway holes
are 8,9,10,14,15. This is a tour style course with waterway views.

Wednesday 5/6 -- TPC:
We played it 2 days after the PGA Tour Monday qualifying to get into the MB Classic.
Range balls were included. Carts have GPS. Conditions were good everywhere.
The greens were smooth, firm and tour fast, they said 11 stimp. Rough also
overseeded, but not deep.
There are 3 forced carries from the tee, that will help confirm if you are playing the
proper tees. TPC is challenging, but still fair, unless maybe you are a beginner.
Much of the challenge is the green complexes, where most of the greens require
accurate approach shots. It is a difficult course to scramble around the greens.
Hole #9 is a brutal long uphill par 4, designed like a par 5.
TPC Myrtle Beach has a good logo that says Myrtle Beach, if you want MB apparel,
so others don't have to ask where is that course.
White tee players should consider making up combo tees, playing the gold on 3,4,9,11,15.
If you are losing a club length with irons, then you are also losing distance on drives,
since it's sea level. Add about 7% to a tee yardage, to see how it plays.
So a white tee listed at 6000 yards will play like a 6420 yard course.

Thursday 5/7 -- PRESTWICK
Greens were very green, smooth + medium speed.
Fairways and rough were very thin with brown spots. Looks like no overseed in
the fairways. Holes are interesting, but it is not an attractive course on many holes.
New bulkheads look good and don't change how the holes play.
The new bulkhead on #16 adds a bunker on the left and makes the hole look nicer.
This Pete and PB Dye design has a Country club atmosphere, with a mix of wide and
narrow fairways. The primary challenge is around the small to medium sized greens,
surrounded by pot bunkers, waste areas, mounds, water, etc. It has a links look,
but with trees.
The Dyes included some forgiving holes, not all out Dye on every hole.
Holes 9 and 18 play around a big lake, heading into the clubhouse.

Friday 5/8 -- ARROWHEAD:
Range balls are provided.
Good overseed in fairways. Greens not overseeded, kinda slow and
not as good as usual, not consistent, looking like they are starving for fertilizer.
We played Cypress/Lakes. I feel Waterway is the best 9 based on holes 2-5 + 9.
AH isn't long from the white tees, but it is fairly tight, not always a driver from the tee.

For my entire trip, the greens and courses that showed little to no signs of a
cold winter or drought were:
Tidewater, TPC, Kings North, Parkland, Rivers Edge, Thistle, Grande Dunes.

Greens only good: Prestwick.

Best Greens: TPC Close 2nd: KN, TW, Grande Dunes

Worst Cart Paths: Oyster Bay

Most disappointing greens for the price:
True Blue (not close to $180-200 greens)

* Some courses above were played during my single days.

RESTAURANTS: (In no particular order) Single + Group Phase.

Boundary House, Lil Pigs, Dagwoods, Clarkes, Gios, J Peters, Flamingo Grill,
Abeulos, Rioz, CA Dreaming, Fire +Smoke, Chesapeak House were all good.

Thanks for participating in MBGT with Trip Reports and other MB info!

Art

I am on the individual part of my spring MB trip. I will post day to day,
then when I return home I will post my group trip report all at once.

Most of us are aware of the very cold winter and drought in MB. It's been about 40 years since I was on
a March MB trip, but the bermuda growth right now is about like then. Although back then in the 80's,
the overseed was a lot heavier.

Whispering Pines:
The 2025 renovation was mostly new greens, new fairways and bunker renovation. They were to cut trees,
but it did not seem like many. The new fairways were very thin, except #18 was overseeded, I guess for
looks from the road. The greens are good, just slow and sticky.
Some tees were closed and sodded. I don't know that wasn't done last summer or maybe it failed.
The 4 par 5's are very good. The range is grass. Get a token in the pro shop.

Oyster Bay:
Greens decent but slow. Fairways thin. Anywhere near the tree line is bare and rooty.
Cart paths are terrible. The repaired parts 2 years ago are minimal amount of paths.
There are a bunch of fun holes. Not many gators today and those were in the water, on a
nice sunny day.

TPC:
Overseeded, green, well maintained. Rough also overseeded.
Greens good, still not at PGA Tour qualyfying speed, but the overseed is still growing.
GPS on carts. Range balls included.

True Blue:
This fairways + tees. Greens kinda lumpy with more growth from old aeration holes.
They were sanding greens, which helped this. They have a lot of fairway bermuda spots
in the greens to make them less true. Green on #4 is more fairway bermuda than tifeagle.
It's not terrible, but it's wrong to have $50 municipal greens at a $200 course.
Carts have GPS. Range balls are included. If you have a raincheck from a few years ago,
you will owe the difference between that value and the fee when booked.
Whispering Pines has better greens than TB right now.

KINGS NORTH:
Everything in good condition. All grown in.
Fairways + tees have good overseed. KN Greens are not overseeded, fast and firm due to new.
Renovated New greens are bigger with more undulations.
New tee colors, where tees behind the white look to be longer.
With bigger tees, white tees are playing longer than the past.
Practice putting greens on range side are overseeded.
Practice putting green between clubhouse and #18 green matches the KN greens.
KN has a more premium feel now. It plays about the same, but the bunkers are more challenging.

Something new was a racoon on the tee of #4 looking in carts. He hung out on the wood side of the path.

8 of us arrived in North Myrtle yesterday afternoon from 5 states. First round was today at Sea Trail Byrd. Course conditions were poor IMHO. Tees were ok, greens were fine but slow. Fairways were disappointing and very hard and tight. Ruffs were bare dirt and very little grass. Bunkers needed maintenance as it looked like they had a lot of footprints that looked old. Good clubhouse and staff.

Given our interest in playing only upscale courses on this trip we will not be playing here again.

Short trip report.

Just want to add my two cents after coming here for years, the message board is an invaluable source of information over the years.

After playing the south end of the strand on our past trip we decided to head north towards the Calabash area. Our Airbnb was in Cherry Grove and each course was no more then a 20 min drive.

Afternoon round at THISTLE. Course was in good shape and was packed upon arrival. They really did a good job with the clubhouse and it was a notable step above the other courses we played. Really could have hung out another hour two after the round. There was 6 in our group, so they broke us up 3 and 3. We played in 4 hours flat. Very solid and fair track.

GLEN DORNOCH was up next and they were not kidding about the three finishing holes. Unfortunately we started on the back nine first, so the wow factor was definitely not the same on the front nine. I think #16 (although crazy difficult) might be my favorite hole in Myrtle. You just don’t see the elevation from the tee box looking down to the intercoastal. You def need your A game to score well here.

Finally we played THE PEARL. I forget which 9’s we played but the entire group felt that the greens were the best here compared to the other courses we played. Very affordable solid track with an interesting mix of holes. Could be a bit of an under the radar course that does not get a lot of noise, but definitely consider it if you are in the area.

Tees: Mostly good. Not sure what can be done but any tee box that is always shaded are in HORRIBLE shape

Fairways: Overseed took well. Pretty even consistency. They are a bit shaggy and balls simply don’t roll out on them.

Rough: They don’t overseed wall to wall so the rough was pretty thin

Bunkers: excellent

Greens: Pretty good. A few spots here and there. The greens are pretty slow but with the undulations on most of them, if they played too quick you would be looking at 5.5 hour rounds

Gators: “Big Boy” wasn’t on property today but we did see a baby, a midsize, and one 13-14 footer.

POP: 4.5 hours. Had a twosome couple walking in front of us.

Cart Paths: Perfect

Has been almost 10 years since I played Heritage Club. It was ok. The back 9 is much better than the front. Other than one par 3 (13) the other par 3s are pretty meh. 12-14 is the best stretch by far and 18 is a good finish.

Conditions were good not great. The $150 paid felt a bit much and that was a Hot Deal. Paying the going spring rate of $190+ just isn’t worth it. Way too many better options at that price point.
