Wow! Thanks for this information. I do not know what is behind this decision. But i anticipate an increase of rates in a near future. Both courses were very popular.

The Pearl is a long time favorite to many. Too bad to lose another 9 holes but hopefully it makes them more viable and able to profitably continue.  Things have looked a bit tired there in recent yrs. Not sure why the housing plans have not progressed to somehow help the overhead.

Sounds like the 36 holes aren't busy enough, so closing 9 holes will save some maint
costs.    Now they can look for a buyer of the closed 9.

I have a feeling that a lot of MB package newcomers play central a lot and veteran MB
package players either gradually retire from package trips or abandon some courses on
the outskirts of MB, unless they are a special course.

The owner stated...

"We just love the land here. I think there’s something anointed and blessed about it."

I've been saying that all along.

I've actually called the area  "Golf Heaven" a couple /few times.

It's an incredible feeling to be on that property. Now,we know why.

When I saw Denis post this, I thought the worst. But it looks like they have a great plan to keep the Pearls going.

The good news is ...there will now be 3 Pearls rather than 2 !!

Thanks for the heads up Denis...and thanks for thinking about me.

@artmbgolf

Interesting analysis Art. In recent years many courses in this area had some difficulties. Think about the Sea Trail courses. Many has been closed like Calabash, Angel Trace. Carolina Forest is fighting hard to survive. Sandpiper was closed for new greens. The Big Cats are in trouble financially. Conditions of play there are suspect. And so on. Distance from central Myrtle Beach could be a factor. There is so much choice nearer. Why to go farther for to save just a bit? The picture is not pink. I am not optimist for the future. Hoping to be wrong.

Pearl will be getting rid of the East hole #6 that most don't like.
They can save maint $ by not maintaining holes they don't need 8 months
of the year.

They need to have their relative start loving Ocean + Marsh Harbour and
do something with them.  Maybe she loves them so much, she doesn't want anyone
to touch them.  🙂

Developers don't seem as interesting in the NC land as they do in the more
developed central MB.   It seems like more retirees are being attracted to the crowds
of central MB, instead of quiet relaxed Calabash.

What you are seeing is just the beginning. I am guessing 20 more courses will close over the next few years. It started with the Chinse buyouts, fewer people playing golf, and now that the economy is hot the land is just too valuable. The Chinese didn't buy all those golf courses to stay open as golf courses. I could very well see the Grand Strand going down to 75 courses or so, especially if people keep moving into the area. As people escape the Northeast or retire to the coast, the Grand Strand or really from Wilmington to Georgetown is a prime target for development. I have seen it in the Raleigh NC area. The land just becomes to scarce and valuable to to keep as golf courses. Private clubs opened(don't see that happening in MB area), but the low to mid tier courses go away. The only thing that could stop it would be if some of the land is not zoned for building because of flooding concerns. And, if they ever open a true interstate into Myrtle Beach look out as that will bring more people.

I agree with you Herdman. However it could take some years. The fact is that more than 1,300 acres in the city are waiting to be developed and a good portion of that land is on the site of a golf course that closed four years ago (Waterway Hills). These acres are also between Grande Dunes and the Barefoot Resort & Golf. This land is central, near of many services. If something is build in a near future, it could be in this place.

Played at the Pearl today and the news seems to be correct, 27 holes starting on Jan. 1, no maps out yet as to how they will arrange the 3 nines.

From the article, it sounds like the East 9 will be all East holes 1,2,12-18.  #2 must be not
too far from #12.     They did not mention names.   My thought is the West front 9 could be
the North.

@artmbgolf

Read that as well Art, but hole 2 and hole 12 are both Par 3's and if I recall are not that close to one another, maybe it will be like th drive at River's Edge from the 10th green to the 1th tee??  Will get back there again to see and ask the Pro Shop.
