Please note that on December 22nd, 2018, we upgraded our site and unfortunately were not able to bring the user ids and passwords from the old site.  So if you were a previous member of MBGT, unfortunately you must re-register on this site.  Your old user id and password will not work.  When you re-register, please use your user id (display name) from the old MBGT site. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

On April 22nd, our hosting provider suffered a very serious cyber attack (some of the details can be found here – https://www.a2hosting.com/blog/windows-service-update/).  As part of the recovery process, they had to perform a system restoration which has caused us to lose about 1 week of posts (plus the week we were offline so that is why recent posts are saying 2 weeks old).  We are still trying to get back the archive site; however, that is looking doubtful at this point in time as the software had some vulnerabilities and may not be permitted to be turned back on even if they can recover the data.

Thank you for your patience during this time.

Update – May 31, 2019

We are happy to announce that almost all functionality has been restored and we have migrated to a new platform which will also speed up the site (something that has been asked for).  Unfortunately, we have not yet found a way to securely host the forum archive, so it remains offline for now.

Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

Never thought of the Dunes as a public course.

Nice to know. I agree that the Dunes is a better course than Caledonia.

I agree with UGP.... The Dunes should never be considered a public course!!  When we expanded our group from 8 players to 16 players 5 years ago... the new guys loved The Dunes and insist we play it every year...which we have. One of the new players 5 years ago {Dan} says to me on the 1st tee.... i can't believe they are allowing us to play here!!  🙂

While The Dunes is private, I guess Golf Digest considers public access to be good
enough to be listed, since it's 'Best public can play".

I am with UGP but i understand what Art is saying. It is only available to play because it is in a golf destination. Hey not going to argue cause at least we can play it.

I always question best course lists - I've seen some courses on lists that I have played and disagree with their ranking. Can't disagree with Dunes and Caledonia though I like the layout at Rivers Edge better than Cal.

New premium dramatic courses open and push a lot of other courses down, then
eventually off the list.

The Dunes is the best it has ever been, but it has been dropping.
100 Greatest Public History: Ranked since 2003.
Highest ranking: No. 15, 2003-04.  Previous ranking: No. 54.     (Now 56)

The best overall list had to be expanded to 200, with new courses being added.

Art - They also have a top 100 Classic course list for the very reason you stated with the new modern courses.

Always a tough topic, everyone has their favorites, can't go wrong with the Dunes though as for Cal. not one of my top 5 courses.

Good conversations always happen when you try to rank courses. Always interesting to see the different takes on the same course from different people.

These rankings are valuable tools. But how often do we have the pleasure to play these courses?

We will not play a lot of them if we go to the same resort every year.
I have played 6 of the top 100 public in this current list, because of 95% of
trips to MB.

More interesting is the top 10, 15, 20 in each state, depending on state size.
We know those courses.
